The Folio Prize Foundation announces a new sponsor and expanded remit for 2017 and beyond, as well as the appointment of Ahdaf Soueif as chair of the judging panel.
Tuesday, 13 December 2016: The Folio Prize Foundation today announces a new collaboration with Rathbone Investment Management Ltd to form the Rathbones Folio Prize. The prize will be awarded to the best new work of literature published in the English language in a given year, regardless of form. Uniquely, the books selected for consideration, the shortlist and the winner of the Rathbones Folio Prize are all chosen by an academy of outstanding writers and critics.
In addition to the Prize, the sponsorship will also support a number of important initiatives generated out of The Folio Academy, the group of over 250 writers who form the Prizeʼs de facto governing body. Initiatives will include a new Academy mentorship scheme, in association with the charity First Story, which will mentor aspiring young writers, as well as a series of Rathbones Folio Sessions throughout the year in the form of literary workshops, lectures and debates.
The first Rathbones Folio Prize will be awarded on Wednesday May 24th 2017 at an awards ceremony held at the British Library, with which the prize has enjoyed a strong association since its launch. Ahdaf Soueif is the author of the bestselling and Booker shortlisted novel The Map of Love. Her account of the Egyptian revolution of 2011, Cairo: a City Transformed, came out in 2014. She is the Founder and Chair of the Palestine Festival of Literature (PalFest).
